URUGUAY 1930
Rimet Cup
Winner / Winner:
URUGUAY
In 1928 he was decided by the then FIFA president, Jules Rimet, the establishment of a new tournament that would involve nationals around the world. The organization was entrusted to the small Uruguay, or rather, to the city of Montevideo, for the year 1930. It was the capital to host all matches, within the stages of Pocitos, Parque Central and Centenario. A few days later, the first problems were raised: many European teams, including Italy declined their invitation because of heavy transport costs and the strenuous journey.
Scotland and England refused, even on the question of principle: since football was born in their two countries, they did not see such a good eye, so much so that, considering World Champions "no matter", they rejected invitations also to the 1934 and 1938 worlds, when the event had already achieved some success. Only thanks to the intervention of FIFA, who promised to pay the expenses of the trip, some nationals of the Old Continent agreed to take part in the event. The matches reserved a few surprises due to poor organization and inexperience.
In Argentina-France, the Brazilian referee Rege set the end after only 84 minutes of play. Only the field invasion of an all-hit audience convinced the race manager to make the remaining six minutes play. Instead, in the match between Argentina and Mexico, the penalty was placed more than 14 meters from the door, instead of the 11-metre regulators: of the three penalty kicked during the race, only one was turned into goal.
In the end, the hosts were coming out, who settled in Romania and Peru in the elimination round, Yugoslavia in the semi-finals and Argentina, in front of over 90.000 spectators, in a final with an electric climate: it seems that some Uruguayan players, a few days before the final, had seen to deliver death threats from Argentine fans. The same happened to the referee, the Belgian Langenus, who imposed FIFA on life insurance for his family.
The Celeste managed to sign the company while having to face the unexpected absence of the strong attacker Anselmo, escaped from the Centenary a few minutes before the start of the game for a panic attack. In the closing meeting, it was the Uruguayan Dorado to open the markings, but the Argentina response led to network, first, Peucelle, and then Stable, and the 1st time ended 2 to 1. In the resumption, the reaction of Uruguay was vehemently, and, within twenty minutes, it marked 3 goals, with Cea, Iriarte and Castro. At the end of the World Championship, no match ended.
A curiosity was about the referees running the races in a jacket and tie, with the socks to the zuava.
The 1930 FIFA World Cup was the first football World Cup tournament ever staged. It was played in Uruguay from July 13 to July 30. FIFA Uruguay chose as hosts at the Barcelona conference on 18-05-1929, as the country would be celebrating the centenary of its independence and the Uruguay national football team had successfully retained their football title at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Thirteen teams participated; nine from the Americas and four from Europe. Few European teams chose to participate two to duration the and cost of travel.
The first two World Cup matches took place simultaneously, and were won by France and the USA, who beat Mexico 4-1 and Belgium 3-0, respectively. The first goal in World Cup history was fard by Lucien Laurent of France. In the final, hosts and pre-tournament favourites Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people, and became the first nation to win a World Cup.
