Notes: The game of the century was defined for emotions that still evoke in those who lived it on the night between 17 and 18 June since when kicking starts in Italy is midnight. And to say that it had started great when after 8 minutes De Sisti throws Bon sign that triangular with Riva and then strikes a strong left that sticks behind Maier.
Then the blues pull the rows in a boat and the game, to say the real bruttina, drags towards 90' with few sussulti: first Rosato that saves on line and then Müller who graces us to empty door. When it seems that the game is finished, at the second minute of recovery Grabowski escapes on the left and crosses in the center where Schnellinger split puts it in the sack for 1-1. The barrel is tremendous and Valcareggi tries to make up by inserting Poletti for the Roseto raft and moving Burgnich on Müller.
But it is precisely the latter that at the 4' minute of the first additional brings to advantage the Germans thanks to the mess between Albertosi and Poletti resulting in the head blow of Seeler on corner of Libuda. In Italy it is feared that the team unwinds but, while jumping patterns and markings, the blues pull out the character and tie with Burgnich (at his first and only goal in national!) who scores collecting a weak repellent of the German defense on punishment of Rivera.
The first additional time ends with the blue advantage that arrives with Riva that throws Domenghini on the left and, regained the ball, wins the contrast with Schnellinger and sticks in the right corner. Finished? Not even for a dream because at 5' of the second additional Grabowski crosses the center, Seeler hits head and Müller corrects by passing the ball between the pole and Rivera that nothing can.
And just the Milanist, to make himself forgive the error launches forward and, unbeaked in German area by Boninsegna, he pulls right on the left of Maier deceiving it with the effect and signing the definitive 4-3. The Azzurri thus conquered the most rocambolic victory and disposition of their history but they will pay the extra in the final with Brazil.
