From white to blue
The first two games of our national team were played with white jersey for a very simple reason: the white shirt cost less than any other!
Starting from the third meeting, a coloured uniform was adopted and in this regard the blue was chosen as it represented the color of the Savoy banner (on which the sabaudo coat of arms were then camping).
Since then, he has always been linked to both the national football team and the Italian representatives of any other sport.
The only exception: in the last fascist period (from the beginning of 1937 to the war) the official shirt of the national became black, and then finally returned to the blue after the war. From the world of Switzerland 1954 the numbering of FIFA jersey was introduced.
Suppliers and Style
From the mid-1970s, they made their first appearance, and in a decisive way, technical sponsors, who became unique suppliers of all necessary equipment to the National Team (except shoes, which each player chose and still can choose freely according to their own comfort).
A special feature, all Italian, concerns a unique choice of our Federcalcio, about the sponsorships, which made up until 2000 the supply agreements between FIGC and various technical suppliers (succeeding over the years), prohibited them from marking with coats of arms or foreign elements, the official uniform of the National. Today the situation is radically changed and such marks are perfectly visible. In the last thirty years, various renowned and prestigious brands have been introduced, in the supply of equipment to the Italian National Team, namely: Adidas (1974-1978), Le Coq Sportif (1979-1984), Diadora (1985-1994), Nike (1995-1999), Kappa (2000-2002) and currently Puma (2003-2014).
The changes must always be read on the basis of the fashion of the moment.
And in fact, we pass from the most spartan models and among them resembling the albores, with crew neck and white shorts (with some variations like black socks of the sixties, then also blue ones) to the 1982 World Cup uniform characterized by a V neck adorned by tricolored edgings, to that of 1994 with tiny tricolour triangles, to reach the 1996 Nike uniforms, characterized by inexplicable lower edges of brown color and a "ITALIA" writing that created very disappointment, since it went down on the buttocks of the players.
New materials and new models
In 2000 Europeans the most significant change was noted in the material with which the Italy shirt was woven. Specifically the Kombat model of Kappa, was very tight and elasticized, making, without doubt, tendency for a certain period. It then continued in the 2002 Japanese World Championship with an evolution of the Kombat model of Kappa, where the numbers of the uniform passed from white to gold color. In 2006, with the entrance as technical sponsor of the German Puma, in the new blue jersey appeared some evident dark blue shades on the edges, while on the second shirt (the white one) there is a blue triangle that starts from the neck. The fabric has passed from a strongly elasticized previous type, to a more classic one. The Euro 2008 qualifying edition, for the success achieved by the Azzurri to the World Championship in Germany, sees as the only novelty the appearance of the fourth star on the tricolor logo of the FIGC that camping on the player's chest.
Towards new tournaments
On 05-02-2008, in the friendly against Portugal, the National Team wore for the first time the new jersey, which will wear at the final stages of the European Championship organized by Austria and Switzerland. Blue coloured, with gold details, to be combined with socks and blue shorts, with the official logo of FIGC with four stars - symbolizing world titles - on the chest in the left side.
Italy stars and strips for the Confederations Cup 2009: in the sense of the four world stars and stripes that cross over the fabric in an almost hypnotic design. The change will only be temporary, exclusively for the June 2009 competition. The new uniform will be very elegant, studied by Puma to celebrate the 2006 World Championship, connecting it ideally to the double success of the 34 and 38.
For the 2010 World Championship, the shirt has a star neck to remember the four symbols of the won World Cup and a high-life short with a "swallow" with front of the Italian tricolor.
