Winner / Winner:
WEST GERMANY

In February 1986, the organizing machine started and officially started in November of that year, with Luca di Montezemolo, 39 years old, already manager at Ferrari, who set himself as a goal "to make a dream".The history of Montezemolo's images focused on the sides in telephone conversations with one of the first mobile phones. However, there was a need to cope with the construction of new stages, since those existing were inadequate, if not even dissatisfactory.

The "Meazza" and the existing stages were expanded and refurbished (with interventions not always necessary), while the construction of new plants began in Bari ("San Nicola") and Turin (the "Delle Alpi"). The costs were astronomical, the World Championship had its massacres in court, with half-sized public infrastructures, interlaced with time politics, certainly not immune to scandals (a few years later Tangentopoli broke out), and for the numerous victims in the yards.

In Milan there were numerous public works "for the Worlds", canteried and never completed, including a hotel in the area of Via Mecenate. In qualifying, if West Germany and Brazil risked large, France fell out of two consecutive semi-finals and from the 1984 European Championship victory over Scotland and Yugoslavia, with Henri Michel and Michel Platini who failed to straighten the sinking boat. Poland, which, with the end of the Boniek era, was also eliminated by English and Swedish.

The favourite number one was indicated in Italy, strong of the beautiful impression given to Europeans in 1988 and, above all, hostess, while in the second row found the Argentina of Diego Armando Maradona, fresh champion of Italy with Naples, Germany of "Kaiser" Franz Beckenbauer and the trio interista Matthäus - Klinsmann - Brehme and Holland of the corresponding red triptych - Rijkaard, who returned to the World Cup at twelve years from the final lost in Argentina and strong of the European title conquered two years earlier.

The official song of the event was To be number one, lyrics and music by Giorgio Moroder, also sung in Italian version by Gianna Nannini and Edoardo Bennato, under the title An Italian Summer (Italian text by Edoardo Bennato). Mascot official of the event was "Hello" a stylized tricolor footballer who sketched a ball. They are the worlds of "Magic Nights", which inflame the stages of Italy '90. The Azores of Azeglio Vicini find an unexpected gunboat: it is Totò Schillaci, who realizes the goal match against Austria.

Against the United States, match-winner is Giannini, while Schillaci repeats himself with Czechoslovakia, before a jewel by Roberto Baggio that exults the Olympic Stadium. In the eighth of the finals Italy faces Uruguay and fatigue, as it was predictable. You have to wait for the 65' to applaud the advantage of the usual Schillaci; then at 83' it is Serena who realizes the goal of safety. The defense continues to be undefeated even in the quarters of the final: Ireland is fatigued with a Schillaci network.

The blues then leave the Olimpico to go to Naples to face Argentina in Maradona. Italy, in advantage with the usual Schillaci, is confused and from a mess between Zenga and Ferri comes the tie of Caniggia. The one to one remains sculpted even after the extra and at penalty kicks Argentina is colder.Decisive for the blue mistakes of Donadoni and Serena.

In the final of consolation, however, Bari decrees the honors of triumph to the blue, celebrating with a moving "ola" and with a big torch the conquest of third place, obtained at the harm of England, whose players join sportingly to the festivities. Schillaci, who scored another goal, thanks to a rigour "deceased" from Baggio 4 minutes from the end, is the head of the world championship with 6 centers.

The 1990 FIFA World Cup, the 14th staging of the World Cup, was held in Italy from June 8 to July 8. Italy was chosen as hosts by FIFA on 19-05-1984, making it the second country to host the event twice. USSR was the rival of Italy's candidacy to host the event. It was won by West Germany, who beat Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup for the third time.

With its third title (and three second place finishes) West Germany became the most successful World Cup nation for four years, until Brazil won fourth their title in 1994. West German team manager Franz Beckenbauer became the second footballer, after Mário Zagallo of Brazil, to win the World Cup as a player (in 1974) and as team manager. In doing so, Beckenbauer also became the first captain of a winning team to later manage a winning squad.

Italy's Salvatore Schillaci won both the Golden Boot as the tournament's top goalscorer, with six goals, and the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. The 1990 World Cup is deemed as one of the poorest World Cups ever. It generated a record-low goals-per-game average and (at the time) record 16 red cards. Most teams relied on defensive play and hard tackling, as well as aggressive intimidation of the referee.

In the knockout stage, many teams would "play it safe" for 120 minutes and try their luck in the penalty shootout, rather than risk going forward. Three of the 4 quarterfinal matches, both semifinals, the 3rd place play-off, and the final were decided on a shoot-out or a match-winning penalty kick. Runners-up Argentina were the first example of this trend, scoring only five goals in seven games (they had, however, lost half their team to injury or suspension by the final).

Eventual champions West Germany were one of the few teams to initially choose an attacking style of play, although they too became more defensive as the tournament progressed.
